Learning a new language can be exhilarating yet nerve-wracking, especially when you begin engaging in conversations. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when trying to respond and even to find yourself being self-critical of minor errors.

This common anxiety even has a name: Xenoglossophobia. Though it’s a mouthful, it essentially means the fear and unease that come with learning, using, or speaking a foreign language. Rest assured, this is a universal experience!

You Are Not Alone

When I first started learning English, I was overwhelmed by the new vocabulary, complex grammar rules, and the fear of making mistakes.  I often wondered if I’d ever be able to engage in meaningful conversations. It’s a journey to learn a new language but there are many ways to accomplish your goals! For me it took taking a step back and setting achievable goals, this helped me boost my confidence and reminded me to celebrate my wins.

Initially, reading was a crucial tool that greatly helped me improve my vocabulary and grammar, even if at the beginning I had to start with children’s books and slowly work my way up to small chapter books. While reading and studying grammar helped, I still struggled with conversation, often freezing and forgetting even basic vocabulary. It’s easy to get fixated on what you don’t know rather than what you do.

Drawing from my experience as both a language learner and teacher, I’ve found that much of the anxiety stems from fears of public speaking and making mistakes. Speaking in front of others, especially when not yet fluent, can be intimidating. The fear of mispronouncing words or using incorrect grammar can be especially stressful. Understanding these sources of anxiety and addressing them positively can make language learning a more rewarding experience.

Let’s explore some strategies that you can implement today to help you manage your anxiety and build confidence on your language-learning journey.

1. Acknowledge Your Anxiety

Recognizing your anxiety is the first step in overcoming it. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about making mistakes, no one can speak a language perfectly right away, mistakes are part of the learning process. Remember, people are generally more focused on your effort to learn their language than on your errors. The goal in the beginning is communication, not perfection.

2. Set Manageable Goals

Sometimes, anxiety stems from seeing language learning as an enormous task. To make it more manageable, break it down into smaller, manageable goals. For instance, start by mastering basic greetings like “hello” and “goodbye” before tackling more complex conversations. You could then move on to learning how to introduce yourself and ask simple questions about someone’s day.  celebrate each small achievement to build your confidence gradually. As you reach these milestones, you’ll find that your anxiety decreases and your confidence grows, making the overall task feel much less daunting. Remember, every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.

3. Create a Positive Learning Environment

Surround yourself with positivity. Engage in language practice within a supportive environment. Whether that’s a language exchange group, an online community, or a friendly tutor. At Craving English, we believe in creating a safe and encouraging learning space. Positive reinforcement from others can boost your confidence and make learning enjoyable.

4. Embrace Mistakes as Learning Opportunities

Mistakes aren’t failures—they’re part of the learning process. Everyone makes errors when learning a new language, and it’s perfectly normal. Instead of stressing over mispronunciations or grammar slip-ups, try to see them as chances to improve. Each mistake helps you get better and remember what to do next time. Even experienced learners and teachers make mistakes and use them as valuable feedback. Being kind to yourself and finding humor in these moments can ease your anxiety and make learning more enjoyable. Remember, you can’t learn without making mistakes, so embrace them and keep practicing!

5. Practice Self-Compassion

Be kind to yourself throughout your language learning journey. Treat yourself with the same compassion you’d offer a friend who’s trying something new. Gentle correction and encouragement will take you a lot further in your language journey than hanging on to mistakes you make. It’s important to be patient with your progress and recognize that learning a new language takes time. Remember, everyone learns at their own pace, and it’s perfectly okay to have ups and downs along the way. Celebrate your efforts and be gentle with yourself as you grow and improve.

6. Utilize Relaxation Techniques

Managing anxiety involves more than just changing your mindset; it also means taking care of your physical state. Incorporating relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or even light exercise can help calm your nerves and improve focus. Making these practices a part of your routine can create a sense of calm and help you feel more centered and ready to tackle your language learning goals. It can also help to try and practice your new language during these relaxing activities, allowing yourself to build a safe zone.

7. Immerse Yourself in the Language and Culture

Make language learning enjoyable by incorporating activities that you love. Watch movies, listen to music, or read books in your target language—whatever sparks your interest. The more you weave the language into your daily life in ways that you enjoy, the less anxiety you’ll feel about practicing. When learning feels fun and relevant to your interests, it becomes a more positive and rewarding experience. One thing that really helped me was watching movies I’d already seen, but this time in English with English subtitles. It allowed me to hear the pronunciation while following along with the text, which was a great way to improve my listening and reading skills!

8. Find a Teacher

You do not have to go on this journey alone. Seeking help from a professional can relieve pressure and help you improve your skills exponentially. There are many teaching methods and techniques, but I personally found that focusing on conversational classes helped improve my anxiety around speaking to others and skyrocketed my learning Journey.
